On April 4, 2002 AC celebrates its first anniversary.

During last two months Project Harmony has been conducted a series of workshops on web-page design for 5 staff members of the National Library of Karelia. "Web Design Courses for American Corners and Centers in Russia" Program is aimed to create and develop the image of the American Centers and Corners located in different cities across Russia, and support information exchange among them.

The result of the workshops is a Petrozavodsk AC web-site. This site will be supported and modified by the staff members who participated in the workshops.

Seminar "Electronic Government" under the support of the Information Research Center of the Consulate General in Saint Petersburg took place at the National Library of Republic of Karelia on February 7, 2002.

The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Karelia, Tatjana Kalashnik read the Governor of Karelia, Leonid Katanadvov's welcoming letter in which he expressed the hope that "new real steps on creation of effective Electronic Government of Karelia should be the result of today's meeting."

A discussion followed.

Representatives of the Karelian Government, scientific and research institutions, universities, profit organizations and mass media were among approximately 50 community members who participated in the seminar.

On the 4th of April at 12:00 the ceremony of the grand opening of the American Corner took place at the National Library. The new collection contains 660 documents including books on the US history, politics, economy and legal sciences as well as language training manuals, atlases, maps, CD ROMs, audio and video materials.

This generous gift from the American Embassy in Moscow is a valuable resource of information about the United States of America for all interested residents of Petrozavodsk and the republic.
