Sacred Harp Singing

"Sacred Harp Singing: A Living Tradition" by Lynne deBenedette

Lynne deBenedette's talk will feature an audio and video presentation of Sacred Harp Singing, a uniquely American musical institution. Audience members will be introduced to the history and contemporary practice of this non-denominational musical genre that emphasizes participation, not performance. In true Sacred Harp community spirit, the talk will include a short singing school and impromptu singing.

Lynne deBenedette is Senior Lecturer in Russian at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She was graduated from Middlebury College with a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and German and from the University of Michigan with a Master's of Arts in Russian Literature.

She has been singing Sacred Harp music for nearly ten years and travels frequently to Alabama and Georgia to all-day singings. Her talk is from the point of view of a participant in the Sacred Harp community.
